  • Pre-Departure Orientation in Houston (Double-occupancy)
  • Language & Culture Orientation in Tokyo (Single-occupancy, includes daily breakfast)
  • Mid-Program Meeting (Multiple-occupancy, includes daily breakfast)
  • Re-Entry Program in Houston (Double-occupancy)
Research Internship Housing: Arranged in consultation with the research host lab/institution. Housing varies and may include dormitories for international students or visiting researchers or furnished rooms/apartments in long-term lodging facilities for foreigners. All students will have access to kitchen facilities at their research internship housing. Most housing will require daily commuting via bus/subway (see Student Costs below).
Partial Meal/Living Costs Stipend While Abroad: This is a partial stipend that will cover most, but not all daily living expenses. Students will receive these funds in Japanese Yen (JPY) while abroad.  Funds are to be used for food/meals and other necessary/required living costs.  Students should budget some of their own money to supplement the stipend provided (see Student Costs below).

  • Pre-Departure & Re-Entry in Houston: Group lunches will be provided. Students will need to purchase 1 – 2 meals  individually each day; typically breakfast and dinner.
  • 3-week Orientation & Mid-Program Meeting: Daily breakfast is provided at the hotel but you will not have access to a fridge or kitchen. Purchase lunch, dinner, snacks individually.
  • 9-week Research Internship Period:  Purchase/make all meals on your own. All students will have access to kitchen facilities at their housing and are encouraged to cook some meals on their own.

Japanese Cell Phone: The program will loan each student a Japanese mobile phone to be used to make/receive calls within Japan.  This will enable participants to remain in communication with in-country program staff, their host labs, and make calls domestically or internationally in an emergency situation.  Students will be expected to reimburse the program for any lost/damaged phones or excessive usage charges. Unless it is an emergency situation, students should not use this phone to make calls or send texts internationally.

To communicate with friends/family back home, we recommend using Skype, Google Voice, or other similar free, internet-based services.

To avoid excessive international roaming/data overage fees we strongly recommend students turn the data on their U.S. smartphone off and only use it when connected to wi-fi. If your U.S. cell phone provider is T-Mobile, you will be able to send/receive texts and access data at no extra charge in Japan if you are on the T-Mobile Simple Choice Plan.
