2017 Part I Program Dates for Japanese Fellows

Selected participants must be able to participate in all scheduled program activities.  No exceptions to the schedule below are allowed. If you have questions about the program schedule please email nakatani-ries@rice.edu.

mid-July 2017 Online Pre-Departure Webinar
by evening of August 13 Arrive Tokyo & Check-in to Hotel
August 14, 2017 Pre-Departure Orientation in Tokyo
August 15, 2017 Depart Japan & Arrive in Houston
Gain 1-day as you cross the International Date Line
August 16, 2017 Immigration Check-in & Orientation to Rice University
August 17, 2017 Begin Research Internship Experience at Rice University (5 weeks)
September 15, 2017 Final Presentation of Research Project Poster at Rice
September 16 – 22, 2017 U.S. University Campus and Site Visits in Washington, DC and New York City

September 23, 2017 International Flight Departs U.S.
Lose 1-day as you cross the International Date Line
September 24, 2017 International Flight Arrives Tokyo. Domestic Flight to Kobe.
September 25, 2017 Closing Ceremony in Kobe (morning) & Depart for Home (afternoon)

Part II Program for Japanese Fellows (Tentative)

Upon successful completion of the program at Rice University, 2017 Japanese Fellows will have the opportunity apply for a Part II program. Those selected as Part II program participant/s would have the opportunity to return to the U.S. for a second research internship experience for approximately 4 – 6 weeks in February – March 2018. The Part II program will be a highly independent experience that will build on all that the Japanese Fellows have learned during their Part I experience at Rice University.

Funding for the Part II program is limited and may vary in each year.  Exact duration will vary based on student and host lab/university availability. More information on applying to and funding for the Part II program will be provided to selected participants in August 2017.

by mid-October Notification of Selected Participant/s for Part II Program
November – December Coordinate Host Lab Placement & Begin Visa Documentation Process with Host University
Nakatani RIES office will provide assistance but student must submit required
visa and application documentation to host university individually.
January 2018 Apply for Visa with U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Japan
Student must apply individually once they receive DS-2019 form from host university and pay individually for all visa application and SEVIS fees.
February – March 2018 Part II Research Experience at Host University in U.S. (about 4 – 6 weeks)
Exact Dates Determined by Host Lab Availability/Preference
